Atlanta CNN —Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows rolled the dice on Monday with his opening move in the sprawling Fulton County election subversion trial: he took the stand himself. If the judge agrees, the trial could end up moving from state court to federal court, a more advantageous legal spot for Meadows. The former chief of staff also grew somewhat exasperated as the prosecutor questioned why his role would include setting up a call to settle private litigation. “There is a role for the chief of staff to make sure those campaign goals and objectives are implemented at the federal level,” Meadows argued. Meadows quipped, “I can’t imagine I would be chief of staff for President Biden.”

In special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case, Trump’s bid to put the trial off until after the election appears to have failed. Meanwhile, the criminal case against Trump in New York is also scheduled for March. For instance, prosecutor Molly Gaston pointedly confronted Trump attorney John Lauro with his own public statements during the hearing Monday. Chutkan, who early in the case against Trump made plain her decisions would be clear and final, told Lauro, “Mr. “I take seriously the request that Mr. Trump be treated like any other defendant, and I intend to do so,” Chutkan said.

In “The Slip,” Prudence Peiffer’s tenderly researched group biography, six visual artists in different seasons of life and seeking different aesthetic ideals met Barr’s challenge with an unlikely spirit of concert. Beside him is his art school friend Jack Youngerman, painter of shaggy color fields in organic, almost floral forms. Grown bored in postwar Paris, the Jersey boy and the Kentuckian relocated to the abandoned sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip, an old manufacturing block in the toe of Manhattan. From 1956 to around 1964, an artist colony and some truly epochal art took shape there. That scene has long fascinated critics but never been the subject of a researched narrative history until now.

Weeks later, Mr. Trump is the former President Trump. Instead, in a brief televised address shortly before 2:30 a.m., Mr. Trump furiously laid down his postelection lie. For weeks, Mr. Trump had been peppering him with tips of fraud that, upon investigation by federal authorities, proved baseless. The cavalry “is coming, Mr. President,” Kylie Kremer tweeted to Mr. Trump on Dec. 19. On Jan. 15, Mr. Trump acquiesced to an Oval Office meeting with Mr. Lindell, who arrived with two sets of documents.

The banking industry called the effort misguided and economically harmful. ‘HOLISTIC REVIEW’Barr’s speech served as a comprehensive update on a “holistic” review of bank capital rules that he launched shortly after joining the U.S. central bank in 2022. He said he will seek to apply stricter capital rules to banks with more than $100 billion in assets, expanding the pool of firms that must comply. Dashing industry hopes for any rules relief, Barr also said he did not plan to weaken an existing surcharge on large global banks or leverage rules which the industry argued hampered Treasury market functions. The Fed has itself come under criticism for its oversight of banks involved in this year’s banking crisis.

Banks with at least $100 billion in assets would be subject to similar regulation that banks with $700 billion in assets currently face, under Barr’s proposal. These regulations would force banks to hold an additional two percentage points of capital, or an additional $2 of capital for every $100 of risk-weighted assets, Barr said. “Our recent experience shows that even banks [with at least $100 billion in assets] can cause stress that spreads to other institutions and threatens financial stability,” Barr in remarks at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Requiring banks to hold more capital could help mitigate risks that arise when banks are under stress. Barr on Fed’s fight against inflationIn addition to discussing bank regulation, Barr also spoke about the Fed’s plans to get inflation down.

The overhaul would require the largest banks to increase their holdings of capital — cash and other readily available assets that can be used to absorb losses in times of trouble. Mr. Barr predicted that his tweaks would be “equivalent to requiring the largest banks hold an additional two percentage points of capital,” if they are implemented. “The beauty of capital is that it doesn’t care about the source of the loss,” Mr. Barr said in his speech previewing the proposed changes. If the Fed Board votes to institute them, their implementations will involve transition time. But the sweeping set of changes that he set out meaningfully tweak both how banks police their own risks and are overseen by government regulators.

Trump’s defense secretary who preceded Esper, James Mattis, had already turned full throttle against Trump before the 2020 election. He opposes Trump’s prosecution in New York by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, for alleged participation in a hush money scheme before the 2016 election. He also questions whether Trump should be prosecuted in connection with January 6, 2021, or his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Any ultimate prosecution with regard to the 2020 election could be a mistake, Barr said, arguing a candidate should have First Amendment rights. There’s an even larger questionRepublicans can defend Trump against prosecution all they want, but for Barr, that’s not the point.

Bill Barr’s Warning on Trump

Former Attorney General William Barr Photo: Paul Kitagaki Jr./Zuma PressA common refrain among many Donald Trump supporters is that, while they may dislike his character and what he did on Jan. 6, 2021, they like his policies. Those voters might consider the warning from Mr. Trump’s second Attorney General, William Barr . “If you believe in his policies, what he’s advertising as his policies, he’s the last person who could actually execute them and achieve them,” Mr. Barr told the City Club of Cleveland on Friday.
So many, in fact, that the report makes it hard to point the blame anywhere in particular. The 114-page post-mortem of SVB, compiled in just over six weeks at the behest of supervisory chief Michael Barr, points out some obvious but undeniable truths. But this ailing dog of a bank also had a too-long leash, thanks to timid, consensus-seeking supervisors. Using pre-rollback rules, SVB would have fallen visibly short of its required liquidity levels by the end of 2022. But the report skirts over the extent to which the Fed’s top staff were aware of risks at SVB.
“SVB’s failure is a textbook case of mismanagement,” Barr says in testimony to be delivered before the Senate Banking Committee. “Our banking system is sound and resilient, with strong capital and liquidity,” Barr said. In his testimony, Barr discloses that near the end of 2021, bank supervisors found “deficiencies” in the bank’s liquidity risk management. That resulted in six supervisory findings linked to SVB’s liquidity stress testing, contingency funding and liquidity risk management. Barr said the Fed will weigh whether the applying those tougher rules to SVB would have helped the bank manage the risks that led to its failure.
WASHINGTON — It became a regular litany of grievances from President Donald J. Trump and his supporters: The investigation into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia was a witch hunt, they maintained, that had been opened without any solid basis, went on too long and found no proof of collusion. Egged on by Mr. Trump, Attorney General William P. Barr set out in 2019 to dig into their shared theory that the Russia investigation likely stemmed from a conspiracy by intelligence or law enforcement agencies. To lead the inquiry, Mr. Barr turned to a hard-nosed prosecutor named John H. Durham, and later granted him special counsel status to carry on after Mr. Trump left office. But after almost four years — far longer than the Russia investigation itself — Mr. Durham’s work is coming to an end without uncovering anything like the deep state plot alleged by Mr. Trump and suspected by Mr. Barr. Moreover, a monthslong review by The New York Times found that the main thrust of the Durham inquiry was marked by some of the very same flaws — including a strained justification for opening it and its role in fueling partisan conspiracy theories that would never be charged in court — that Trump allies claim characterized the Russia investigation.
Seth DuCharme, who had returned to the Eastern District as the interim U.S. attorney after working as one of Barr’s counselors, offered a powerful defense of the prosecutors’ case. “Is it worth it?” Barr asked at one point, according to one official’s notes of the meeting. According to current and former Justice Department officials, Barr later asked one of his aides for an evaluation of the evidence against Cienfuegos. Ebrard told Barr he wanted to see the evidence against Cienfuegos. On Barr’s orders, Robotti and other Eastern District prosecutors hurriedly assembled a file of more than 700 pages of intercepts.
As in Danchenko’s trial, Durham failed to convict Sussmann of making false statements to the FBI. And therein lies the reason underlying Durham’s losing trial record. On Monday, during Durham’s closing argument against Danchenko, the special prosecutor made a point of rebuking the FBI’s 2016 investigation. The Hartford Courant reported her concern about “pressure from Barr ... to produce results before the election.”Durham, however, stuck with Barr. And Barr’s energetic attempts after Jan. 6 to rehabilitate his image cannot erase his sad final legacy as a Trump enabler.
